Kärcher Dirt Blasters

A pressure washer is a very helpful and versatile tool for cleaning outdoor surfaces.

The attachment in particular determines for which area of work the device is particularly well suited.

A dirt blaster concentrates the water jet and sets it in rotation to remove even particularly stubborn dirt from cracks and crevices.

But how exactly does a dirt blaster work and how can you recognise a high-quality product? And what options are there if the Kärcher dirt cutter is defective? You will find the answers to all these questions in the following text.

Repair instructions for Karcher dirt blasters
The water jet no longer rotates in a circle
If the water jet comes out of the nozzle rigid instead of rotating, this usually has one of two causes: either the nozzle is clogged or a small turbine wheel attached to the nozzle carrier is worn out. In the first case, it is sufficient to clean the nozzle once. If there is wear on the turbine wheel, you can usually carefully rework the shape with a carpet knife and the wheel will turn again.
The water jet comes out of the nozzle irregularly
If the water jet comes out of the dirt blaster irregularly, this is often a sign of dirt. The front of the nozzle can be cleaned carefully with a needle. If this does not help, then the dirt tiller should be unscrewed and thoroughly cleaned from the inside.
The water pressure is too low
If the dirt blaster no longer cleans as it is supposed to, this can be a sign of widespread contamination. Especially in regions with tap water rich in lime, the lime often settles in the dirt blaster. Here it helps to soak the attachment in a glass of descaler and clean it that way.

In general, unscrewing the attachment can help clarify any problems with the rotary cleaner. Most models are equipped with a thread for this purpose. Since this is often quite stiff, it can help to clamp the dirt blaster in place. Visible dirt inside the attachment can be tackled in this way. Worn individual parts also come to light in this way.

Often these can be reworked with common household tools so that the dirt blaster can be made ready for use again. Greasing and oiling the pivoting elements can also help the dirt blaster to regain its strength.

What distinguishes the best dirt blasters?

This is how you recognise high-quality dirt blasters:

  • Inner part of the nozzle made of a high-quality material: brass, ceramic, etc.
  • Temperature resistant up to 155° degrees
  • Pressure resistant up to 350 bar
  • In the dirt blaster, the water jet of the pressure washer is bundled and set in rotation.

This process means that this component is exposed to particularly high forces and therefore wears out over time until it breaks.

A good dirt blaster can therefore be recognised by the use of particularly high-quality materials for the nozzle and the bearing ring.

Dirt grinders where these components are made of brass or ceramic have a particularly long life. Attachments that are mainly made of plastic wear out much faster or break directly if the pressure is too high and thus become unusable.

Such plastic attachments are usually available from £30, while dirt blasters made of higher-quality materials are available from £60. Another important criterion when choosing a dirt blaster is its temperature and pressure rating.

A hot water pressure washer can reach temperatures of up to 155° Celsius. Most cheap dirt grinders made of plastic would melt at these temperatures. Professional attachments, however, can withstand these temperatures and can often be used for pressures of up to 350 bar.

What is a dirt tiller and how does it work?

A dirt blaster is an optional attachment for a pressure washer. It significantly increases the cleaning performance of the device by centring the jet of the cleaner into a point jet and rotating it. This is why it is also known as a “rotor nozzle”.

It increases the pressure of the jet because the water now has a smaller surface area available. This means that the dirt is hit with greater force and can be removed from the surface more easily.

The rotation of the jet ensures that the dirt is hit from several angles of attack and is thus loosened more effectively. In this way, the dirt is virtually flung out of cracks and crevices. However, due to the higher pressure of the jet, the cleaning surface is also subjected to greater stress than when using a flat water jet.

What are the advantages / disadvantages of a dirt blaster?

Pros
  • Cleaning performance is increased
  • Weaker pressure washers can perform tasks for which pressure is actually not sufficient.
  • Larger areas can be cleaned at the same time
  • Even particularly stubborn dirt can be removed
Cons
  • Dirt blaster is a wearing part and must be replaced regularly if it is made of plastic
  • The surface to be cleaned is subjected to greater stress
